Guest Post: Chocolate Chip Donuts with Blueberry Glaze

Today I'm really excited to have Lauren from Love Lola here to share with you this amazing recipe for Chocolate Chip Donuts with Blueberry Glaze. Holy yum! As you may know, I'm a huge fan of blueberries and love throwing them in my recipes (ie: Balsamic Blueberry Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Blueberry & Peanut Butter Green Smoothie, and Red Velvet and Blueberry Ice Cream), so these donuts are right up my alley.

If you haven't checked out Lauren's blog before, what are you waiting for? Not only do her recipes look awesome, Lauren is an expert when it comes to sneaking healthy ingredients into a dish! This Blackberry and Beet Chocolate Cake looks incredible, and she even has a whole collection of tasty gluten-free recipes.

Take it away, Lauren!

3 Weird Music Genres (That Aren't Really That Weird)

Today Allie from Call Me Sassafras is sharing three odd music genres (that really are not that strange.) I always like to check out different types of music, so I enjoyed giving these a listen. My favorite has got to by the electro-swing!

Hey y'all! I'm Allie and I blog over at Call Me Sassafras. The name comes from a nickname that my longtime boyfriend calls me when I'm being, well, sassy! My blog is a place where we can celebrate our uniqueness + intelligence. I'm all about owning my quirks, whether that includes my obsession with dinosaurs or tendency to sing really loud in the car!

One of said quirks is that I listen to weird music. But like good weird! When it comes to music, don't restrict yourself to a genre. Don't say, "I like rap!" or "I like pop" when there's so much more you probably haven't given a chance yet! So today for example, I'm gonna give you three kinds of music and I challenge you to give them a try. They sounded weird to me at first too, but there's beauty in trying something new!

Example one. Celtic rock. Wanted to feel classy and badass and dramatic all at the same time? This is for you. And I don't drink, but these sure would make a heck of a drinking song. Bagpipes can be awesome, man. Especially with those electric guitars. (More here.)

................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Example two. Electro-swing. Stick with me guys, just try them once! This is 1920s style swing, remixed with some techno. I don't like techno, but I love this kind of music. Start off easy with a cover of Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" and go on from there. The first two both have rad, retro videos too.

................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Example three, the weirdest of them all: Gregorian chants. So maybe this isn't music, but it's so relaxing to listen to, especially after a long stressful day. Like all of the above, give it a chance!

Gregorian Chants How about that! Very La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, right?

So what did you think? Weird/worthless or weird/wonderful? Do you have any weird music likes? If you like things like this (or I do post "normal" music too), head over to my blog! You can see more playlists here, here and here. And be sure to know you're coming from here--leave your blog and I'll check you out!

Japanese Onigiri

Today I'm really excited for Melyssa from The Nectar Collective to share a Japanese dish called onigiri! In case you aren't familiar with Melyssa, you can find a whole interview with her here, but you should also check out her awesome blog! I think you'll quickly find out why it's one of my favorites. Melyssa actually lives in Japan, so I was excited for her to share a recipe that I was totally unfamiliar with! I'll let Melyssa take it from here...

japanese-onigiri-recipe-1

Hi everyone! My name is Melyssa and I'm a California girl currently living in Tokyo, Japan. I have a blog called The Nectar Collective where I share my travel adventures, creative projects, and tips on maintaining a positive lifestyle. I also have a corgi named Monja who makes an absurd amount of appearances on my blog. He even writes his own column...let's just say he's a pretty eccentric little guy.

Anyways, today, I'm sharing a traditional Japanese recipe with you for a food called "onigiri." Roughly translated into English, this means "rice ball" and I think you'll see, that is literally what this is! Except better, because a ball of rice would be kind of a boring recipe to share with you, right? No, onigiri is stuffed with anything under the sun. In Japan, you can walk into any convenience store and be faced with 20+ different onigiris for your choosing. Today, I'm sharing a typical Japanese onigiri and one that I invented called the California onigiri (don't tell Japan about that one). Shall we begin?

japanese-onigiri-recipe-2

Ingredients:

- White rice
- A bowl of water with salt in it
- Fillings (We'll talk about this below!)

japanese-onigiri-recipe-3

First of all, cook your rice and let it cool a little so that you can handle it easily. Also, coat your hands in your water/salt mixture, which will keep the rice from sticking all.over.you. Then, as seen in step 1, take some rice and mold it into a ball-ish shape in your hands. Next, in step 2, make a dent in your ball. This is where your filling will go! Finally, in steps 3 and 4, add your filling into your ball!

As far as fillings go, you can honestly use water you want (so long as it isn't super wet/mushy, which will make your onigiri soggy). In picture 3, I used avocado and cheese. This is the California Onigiri! In picture 4 I went for cooked salmon. Other popular alternatives are tuna with mayonnaise, seaweed, or fish, cooked or not. Lastly, add more rice on top of your ball to cover your filling. Mound it all together with your hands. If you want it to be triangular in shape, which is common in Japan, then it helps to make an L shape with your fingers and work the ball of rice against your hand.

That's it! Your'e done!

Once your rice and ingredients are cooked, you can make each onigiri in just a couple minutes! It's also pretty fun - like clay for hungry adults. I hope you enjoyed this little cultural recipe and I'd love to talk to you more over on my blog, The Nectar Collective. Have a great day, everyone!

Guest Post: Meghan from The Magpie

Today I'm sharing a guest post from Meghan, who is the creator of one of my new favorite blogs,  The Magpie. Meghan's outfits always look effortless, and yet so polished. Head over to her blog and you will see what I mean!
..........

Why did you decide to create a fashion blog?

I have always had a passion for fashion; however, it didn’t fully blossom until after I’d graduated from college (having a small clothing budget up until then probably had something to do with it). It is so invigorating piecing together outfits and being able to express myself outwardly. To me, that's art... Creating.

I enjoy experimenting and sharing my "inventions" with others – that is ultimately why I decided to start my blog. My idea was to utilize that mode of communication and help others discover/express their individuality via their wardrobe as well. Just spreading the love in the wonderful world of blogging! <3

Hello Lovely Readers of Amanda k. by the bay
I'm Tammy, and am the voice behind the blog Lemons, Avocados & the Bay
Amanda and I have a lot of things in common...
You know the red hair, the whole living by the bay thing, and that whole "growing up" thing.
So lately I've been thinking about "growing up" thing a lot and...
What the heck am I?
I guess I'm not really a girl anymore...
I kind of feel like a young woman...
But am I a "woman"?

Lately I've tried figure out how to describe myself and the other females around me, and then my words start to get all jumbled when I attempt to define who is a girl and who is a woman?

Where do we start crossing that line between girl, young woman, and woman?
Is it when you finish college or grad school?
Get a "real" job.. you know the 9-5 kind?
Or the day you start paying your own bills, and start feeling guilty when you ask your parents for money?
How about when you get married?
Buy a house?
Have kids?
 Or...
Is it when you start gathering the strength to stick up for yourself and what you believe is right?
When you start thinking for yourself, and worrying less about what people think?
Maybe it's all these things combined into one?

In the end, does any of this really matter?
I guess I'm trying to figure this all out
and...
I guess I'm getting old(er)
...
Thanks for having me Amanda.
I love your blog and feel so lucky to be guest posting here today.
