Presentation Day

Today my group and I are presenting our experiment to the rest of the class. This class is the last in the statistical sequence for psychology, and I can't wait to be done! Math has never been my favorite subject, and I thought by majoring in psychology I wouldn't have to revisit it. Very, very wrong. But it's almost over! Hallelujah.

While on the topic of things I dislike, presenting is something that gives me some serious anxiety. I start worrying about public speaking days in advance. Once I get in front of people, usually I calm down and get through it just fine. It's the few hours before that especially stress me out!

For an extra boost of confidence, I like to dress up just a little. My logic is when you feel more confident, you're able to speak with more authority. Also, if you goof up, maybe they won't notice because they are too busy admiring your outfit. Maybe. I have a feeling my professor couldn't give a shit about my attire. But if it makes you feel better, why not right?

  1. Oh, research and statistics and the life of a psych student...fun, fun! Those are some of the less glamorous courses that we have to take, aren't they?
    But you look great!

In answer to your comment on my blog: the job market is so-so. It honestly depends on what you want to do. I worked for a while as a Behavioral Support Specialist at a school for kids on the autism spectrum, and used a lot of my developmental psych there. I've always been more interested in developmental & developmental disabilities. A few of my other psych grad friends are doing things like living and working in a L'Arche community (look them up if you've never heard of them, they're awesome); running an after-school program for refugee kids that immigrated to the US; working as research assistants; working at clinical social work practices, etc. In the realm of counseling, I feel like you can't do too much without grad school.

You're probably aware of this, but there's pretty much 5 big routes you can take in grad school with psych. There's your Ph.D, your PsyD, your MD, your Masters in Psych, and an MSW (Masters of Social Work). MD is the route to go if you want to be a Psychiatrist who can prescribe meds. PsyD is a good degree for a practicing clinical psychologist, but there's a lot less funding available for these programs (they're 3-5 year programs, I believe). Your Ph.D is obviously great, and really good if you want to go into higher education or practice clinical psychology...these programs are research-based and often pretty well-funded, which means you might pay little to actually get the degree. My advisor always said not to even bother with a Masters in Psych. She said it was a pretty useless degree and if you wanted a Masters and wanted to be in a clinical or counseling position, go for the MSW. It's the terminal degree for a social worker, you can finish it in 2 years, and it's solid. So yeah...that's the rundown of psych grad school as I understand it!

Don't be scared...graduating is a huge adjustment, but you get to say you're a college grad! Woohoo! And feel free to e-mail me if you want to chat some more about all of this! :)
